Sometimes I need a filter between my brain and my mouth.
This is not the way to get one.

Daddle Doo - I love you!

So the day went quite well - got a heap of work done, felt like I earned my salary and got to head off a few minutes early.

Car ride home is uneventful - which is nice for a change because for some reason I think the Government workers usually wait for me to leave work and proceed to conduct drag races on the main roads all the way to our house. No, I'm serious - it's rare that I get a day where I'm not sitting at traffic lights next to some chain smoking, nail biting, make-up applying psycho in their Tarago, revving their engine, eyeing me off, daring me to take them on and get past them before 2 lanes merge into 1.

And that's just the guys.

Is it any wonder people think Government workers are unstable**? Or may be that's just here...

Anyway, we make it home in comfortable non-drag-race fashion and grab the mail.

I am EXTREMELY pleased to see that I have a parcel card in the mail box. Mega excited! Even made being rained/down poured on less irritating.

So I tell the Toddler we're going to collect a parcel from the post office. And as a result all the way to the post office I get sung a song about going to the post office to get a parcel. Awesome stuff.

I park the car and decide that since I'm going to have to swim to the parcel collection window it's going to be easier to leave the Toddler in the car and run over. Yeah, I know - not exactly high level parenting but as I waded my way through the water it become increasingly clear that I'd made the right choice.

I dump my swim fins and snorkel and go up to the parcel collection window, hand over my parcel card and wait.

I love getting parcels. Even if I know what it is. Some days I'm tempted to send myself something from work in a box just to be able to get a parcel.

Yeah - I'm tragic. But at least I can admit it.

So, the moment of truth arrives and the parcel is placed in my hands. I take a look and it dawns on me...

I squeal and say (probably too loudly) "Oh excellent! My nappies are here!"

Now, the lady looked at me kind of funny - so I felt the need to explain that they were for the Toddler. She looked around for a child and when she couldn't see one just said "sure, okay". Like I was making it all up.

As a result the Guru will be collecting parcels for our family. I don't know that I could face the post office lady who thinks I have to wear adult nappies on a regular basis. And to make matters worse that I have to order some sort of special adult nappy to be shipped here - I'm not even normal enough to grab my adult nappies from Coles like everyone else.

Oh the shame.

It's at this point that I develop the ability to walk on water in order to get away from the embarrassment a little bit faster.

But once I am far, far away from the lady who thinks I wear nappies the excitement returns. YEAH - I got my very first lot of modern cloth nappies for the Toddler.

We get home and I tear open the post bag with my teeth. No, I actually had to - going to the drawer and getting scissors would have wasted precious ogling time.

And they are magnificent. I love them. They are fabulous. Would you like to see them? Okay...

They're Daddle Doo nappies, made by Hailey who is a WAHM - her website is here.

I am so excited to have them and the Toddler is wearing one tonight. I put the middle nappy above on her this afternoon and this is how it looks:

The tears aren't over the nappy. It's because Hoot the Owl (from the ABC2 show Giggle & Hoot) has flown away to watch over everyone tonight (it's the Giggle & Hoot Goodnight Hour on ABC2). And he's gone without her giving him a hug first. So there were tears.

But a better example of how fab they look is here...

Oh yeah - me and mah super cool nappeh...

Me and mah super cool nappeh showin' the cat who's boss...

And just a quick pose to show everyone how fab mah 'sheepy shoes' look with mah new nappeh

I love the Toddler's new nappies - they look so good. Thank you Hailey!!

And who knows, maybe at some stage I'll take photographic evidence and show the post office lady that the nappies weren't for me.

**no offence to anyone who is a Government worker...I'm sure you, yourself, are quite stable. And if you are unstable...well...I'll drag race you tomorrow on the way home...it's the only way to settle this argument.

My Plan for Jewellery and Cloth Nappy Happiness

So I've been trying to think of the best way to get everything...and by that I mean to be the proud owner of Tina Steinberg jewellery and modern cloth nappies.

And after some events this evening the following statements are what I've come up with.

1. When you've gone so long without a bikini wax that standing up from your desk means rogue hairs entwine themselves in the fabric of your knickers and tear themselves out - you know you should probably make an appointment.

Wait - who said that!?...................

.........!

The Factual Statements of Events This Evening that Lead Me to Believe that Christmas and Nappy Happiness Will All Work Out. (Or...'Sweet, I'm gonna get all that stuff!!)

1. Expecting your significant other to be excited about Christmas presents and ordering them online from a store in the US and having to use kits to get imprints of fingers etc is a completely unrealistic expectation and you will cancel Christmas and rent a room with the Grinch.

2. Tallying up the cost of point 1 and showing your significant other online how easy it is will mean that Christmas is back on and the Grinch needs to refund your bond.

3. Tallying up the cost of point 1 will mean you'll keep your cloth nappy costs to yourself. And suddenly edit the story to say 'Just going to get some nappies' and not correcting any assumptions that they are Huggies.

4. You will begin to receive packages in the mail...and your significant other will be joyous to be told that you've won a nappy contest and will be sent samples...to keep...

5. Claim ignorance about bank charges and credit card statements.

6. Tell the truth about the nappies AFTER your new fingerprint jewellery is safely around your neck...but standing far enough away to prevent any strangulation by said jewellery, facilitated by said significant other.

Providing I survive all of the above, it will be a lovely Christmas this year.

Ahhhhh - bring on December...

Cloth Nappies - As Hard As They Look?

Now, before the Toddler was born, I was one of those expectant Mum's who was all 'Oh, I'll be sooo good, I'm going to use cloth nappies'. Then, as birth loomed closer, I had a slight change of heat and started saying 'Well, I'm going to use cloth at home, and disposable when we go out.'

Once the Toddler had arrived I persevered with the cloth nappies for home and disposable while we were out for about 2 or 3 weeks. And then slowly, the disposables crept into my daily routine and the cloth nappies were left to collect dust, folded and lined all pretty in the lower shelf of the change table.

Now, my rather excellent friend at Madomi has used cloth nappies since I've known her. And she has some truly excellent and gorgeous nappies (and children!). But for some reason, I really struggle with the whole concept of cloth nappies.

It could be because I started out with your traditional cloth nappy. You know, large squares of fluffy cotton that you fold eight hundred times to get them to the right size and hopefully absorbency, and put a blue, flushable liner in and off you go. They attach with a Snappy (or a nappy pin, if you're brave enough to risk shoving the sharp end under your finger nail).

I won't lie to you - I do love using cloth nappies because I love the idea that the Toddlers nether regions are in something soft and gentle. Huggies are wonderful and I've never had a problem with them, but they still strike me as a bit rough sometimes...

But what I don't love is the hassle of the cloth. As in, having to fold them and everything. I have enough washing to fold in a week without adding 3 million cotton squares to the mix! (A slight exaggeration but it feels that way some days...)

Thanks Papac Productions & Google!

So my question to all you Mummy's out there who use MODERN cloth nappies is:

  1. How do you get started? I want to give it a go but I don't want to leap in the deep end
  2. Is there any way that I can slowly work my way to cloth only? Or do I have to get the cloth, ditch the Huggies and become a convert overnight?
  3. How do you cope with dirty cloth nappies and being out and about? Hell, how do you manage them at home!? I'm honestly terrified of walking around a shopping centre with the scent of skanky nappies wafting behind me. Please tell me there's a way to manage this gracefully. (And I've learnt that they aren't to be soaked in a nappy bucket with soaker added.)
  4. Is there any point!? The Toddler is now almost 20 months and is doing all the right things in terms of toilet training. But I keep thinking that if I could get a couple for her now, test them out (including the overnight durability and absorbancy) then for the next one I'd be all set to go and I could start slowly building a collection without needing to spend a fortune right this very second.
Spreading out the cost over time will be very good for the Guru's heart. And will maintain my current status as 'Married'.

I love how the cloth nappies look these days and I do honestly think that the new modern ones would be a nice way for me to be a bit greener in our life but also still be convenient and not too painful for me to deal with.

So tell me ladies - what do you think and how did you do the cloth nappy 'thang'?
